Beginning Video Production


Course Description:

Beginning Video Production provides students with the basic foundations necessary to create videos from initial idea to finished video. Focus is placed on pre-production, production and post-production skills and techniques. Professionalism, leadership and teamwork are also emphasized. Students learn how television works, proper camera techniques, basic video editing, basic audio, lighting, studio production and script writing.

Lab Fee:

$10 per semester
2 miniDV tapes, 3-ring binder, and notebook for journaling, blank DVDs for project archiving and misc. supplies needed throughout the year are included in the lab fee. The lab fee must be paid by the end of the first week.

1. Video: Communication & Production, by Jim Stinson
2. Various readings provided by the instructor including newspaper, magazine and internet articles.

Classroom Expectations:

Students are expected to pay attention and participate in all classroom discussions, turn assignments in on time, contribute equally to group projects and treat each other with respect. At no time will any of the following be tolerated: profanity, racist or disparaging comments, sleeping during class, and food or drink in the classroom. The school wide tardy policy will be enforced.

Professionalism:

Professionalism is stressed throughout this course. Professionalism includes: being on time and prepared, using appropriate language, working only on assigned projects, respecting those around you, etc.

Equipment Use and Misuse:

During the year students will work with and around consumer and professional video equipment. The success of this program depends on the availability of properly functioning equipment to all students. On occasion students will check out equipment for school related use during class and/or after school. By checking out the equipment the student understands that the responsibility for the care and treatment of all equipment lies with him or her.

By signing this syllabus you understand that any equipment damage occurring from improper, unsafe or unwise use shall be the sole responsibility of the student checking out the equipment. This includes the cost of repair and/or replacement of broken, improperly functioning or lost equipment.



Projects:

The world of video production involves groups of individuals working together to create a final product. In an effort to emulate real world conditions several group projects will be assigned in addition to individual projects. The success of the group project depends on all members of the group working together and each completing his or her task in a timely and efficient manner.

Tests and Quizzes:

Tests and quizzes are given in both written and lab form. If a student has an excused absence on the day of a test it must be made up on the first day of return to class. (A grade of 0 is entered in the grade book until the test or quiz is made up.) A student with an unexcused absence is not allowed to make up a test or quiz.

Classroom Media:

During each unit a combination of video clips is often used to illustrate key points and foster creativity. Clips are taken from the films below and are appropriate to the educational setting. More films may be added to the list during the year. (Contact, Star Wars, Kindergarten Cop, Finding Nemo, The Goonies, Remember the Titans and  Back To The Future.)
